Wind Power: Driving Australia’s Transition to Net-Zero

3 Sept 2025

As Australia pushes towards net-zero targets, the renewable energy sector continues to accelerate across all fronts.

Wind’s role in Australia’s energy mix

Wind energy remains at the heart of this transformation, delivering clean, reliable power at scale and playing a pivotal role in decarbonising our energy system. In 2024, wind was Australia’s second-largest electricity generation source, supplying 13.4% of the nation’s total electricity, behind only black coal at 39.1% (Clean Energy Australia 2025, Clean Energy Council).

That contribution equates to:

33.5% of Australia’s renewable energy

31.9 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity

Enough power to supply over 6 million homes

With 13.3 gigawatts (GW) of installed wind capacity across the eastern and southern states, wind has become a cornerstone of Australia’s clean energy mix.

Investment momentum

2024 also saw a rebound in investment, with $5.9 billion committed to new onshore wind projects. Eight new projects were greenlit, adding an additional 2.2 GW of capacity to the pipeline. These commitments reflect growing investor confidence in the sector, as technology costs continue to fall and government policy strengthens.

Growth outlook

Looking ahead, Australia’s wind industry is poised for sustained growth:

  • The market is forecast to generate $3.5 billion in revenue by 2025 (IBISWorld)
  • Over the past five years, revenue has grown at 10.6% annually
  • From 2025 to 2029, wind electricity generation is projected to rise at a 7.69% annual growth rate, reaching 29.33 billion kWh (Statista)
  • Long-term forecasts anticipate 8–10% CAGR over the next decade

This growth is essential to meet Australia’s decarbonisation targets. With renewable penetration already at 40% in 2024, the next decade will demand significant scaling across manufacturing, construction, engineering, operations, and maintenance. To stay on track, wind capacity will need to increase six-fold (Australian Energy Market Operator, 2024 Integrated System Plan).

ART’s role in supporting growth

At ART, we’ve seen first-hand how wind energy has matured into a bankable, large-scale contributor to Australia’s energy system. Our work in met masts, remote power, and communications infrastructure ensures developers, investors, and operators have the data and solutions they need to deliver successful projects.

As the industry grows, our commitment remains clear: supporting the safe, efficient, and innovative rollout of wind projects across Australia, helping turn net-zero targets into reality.
